MooAm (CEO Harry Hyun) has introduced a new direction for the popularization of Korean literature with its animation 'Natasha's Story,' created using generative AI technology.
The piece begins with the character Natasha, with white hair, singing along with her pet donkey, Donki. It reinterprets Baek Seok's poem 'Natasha, the White Donkey, and Me,' representing a new take on contemporary Korean poetry. The animation incorporates songs, artwork, movements, and sound effects, all produced using generative AI, and was completed within a mere two weeks.
Premiered at the 'AI Content Festival 2024,' hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and managed by the Korea Creative Content Agency, the work received warm responses from the audience. The seven-minute animation captures the lyrical essence of the poem through AI technology, infusing the characters with vibrant life.
CEO Harry Hyun commented, "I wanted to try a lyrical musical animation rather than live-action in reinterpreting traditional Korean fairy tales and literary works through generative AI." He added, "While there are aspects like motion consistency and character development that need improvement, the endeavor to reinterpret Korean literature through AI itself is innovative. It's amazing that such attempts are possible even without animation specialists or illustrators."
The project first gained international attention as a nominee at the AI Film Award Venice on September 4 and will be featured as a finalist at the Neu Wave AI Film Festival in Los Angeles on November 23.
In December, MooAm will introduce Korean AI content at a special promotion booth during the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) in Singapore, one of Asia's largest broadcast and content markets, attracting media representatives from over 60 countries.
Recently, MooAm was selected for the 2024 Broadcasting and OTT Planning and Development Support project by the Korea Communications Agency for its 'AI Dark Fairy Tales' project, showcasing its active strides in content creation using AI technology. Currently, the company is collaborating with leading Korean AI authors to transform six traditional Korean fairy tales and poems into works created through generative AI.
CEO Hyun emphasized, "The combination of literature and AI holds infinite possibilities. We are entering an era where individuals can realize their own visions without the need for specialized personnel or expensive equipment." He also noted, "There are still challenges such as copyright, character originality, and a sense of déjà vu, but this field is very encouraging for young creators."
