Women Filmmakers' Borderless Solidarity: Do You Know About the 'Intimacy Coordinator'?

Writer: MooAmMooAm

K-content producer MooAm Inc. (CEO Harry Hyun) announced on the 10th that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Japan's first intimacy coordinator, Momoko Nishiyama, to enhance the content production environment in Korea and Japan and to establish intimacy coordinating systems in both countries.

The intimacy coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the filming environment is safe and that scenes involving physical contact or exposure are conducted smoothly, which has become an increasingly recognized profession worldwide following the visibility of movements such as the 'Me Too' campaign.

While the Korean content industry has attracted global attention, the role of intimacy coordinators is not yet sufficiently recognized within the local film and drama production scenes. In Japan, the necessity for specialist intervention in scenes involving physical contact or exposure has become more recognized, leading to the standardization of intimacy coordinators. However, Korea still lacks sufficient systems and awareness regarding this profession, which this MOU aims to address.

The key aspects of this agreement include fostering cooperative content production environments between Korea and Japan, implementing intimacy coordination systems to innovate domestic production culture, and creating a safe and creative production environment led by women.

Harry Hyun, CEO of MooAm Inc., expressed, "As a female director and CEO, I have always been aware of the importance of intimacy coordinators, and I am pleased that this agreement allows us to continue positive discussions regarding the film production environment in both Korea and Japan."

Momoko Nishiyama added, "The role of an intimacy coordinator involves understanding the director's intentions, pre-coordinating the actors' opinions and boundaries regarding certain scenes, and persuading them to reach a proper agreement. This role ultimately assists in production by ensuring that everyone involved understands their roles and can focus on creativity."

Following this MOU, both parties plan to regularly hold workshops for Korean filmmakers on intimacy coordination and actively promote the system at global markets, including the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFFCOM) and K-EXPO INDONESIA 2024, in October. This initiative is expected to enhance mutual understanding and improve the production environments within the content industries of both countries.
